What you can do

While we are doing our part to safeguard your information, there are also important measures you can take to protect yourself when you use Online Banking.

Here are some valuable tips to boost your security, including tips for Internet use and email.

Set up account alerts from within your online banking

Automated messages can be activated to "alert" you by either e-mail or SMS text in the event that select key activities have occured on your account such as a change in password, incorrect responses to your security questions, and more...

  • Navigate to the "Messages and Alerts" area on the left hand side menu of your main page once you have logged in
  • Click on the "Manage Alerts" subcategory within that area
  • Choose any of the available alerts from the list that you would like to activate, and follow the instructions to set them up
To protect your passwords
  • Please do not share your passwords or access codes with anyone. If you think that a password or access code of yours has been compromised, please contact Outlook immediately.
  • Do not select a Personal Access Code (PAC) for online banking, or a Personal Identification Number (PIN) for your ATM card that is easy to guess (e.g. 12345). In addition, do not base them on personal information that may be easy for someone to guess (e.g. birth date, address, phone number, social insurance number)
  • Do not allow anyone to observe you while you enter your PIN or PAC number.
  • Change your PIN and PAC regularly.
  • Contact us immediately if you suspect someone has gained knowledge about your PIN or PAC.
When using Online Banking
  • To ensure a safe and secure banking session, only visit reputable sites. If you visit any questionable web sites we recommend you close and restart your browser before using Online Banking.
  • Do not use automatic password-save features in the browsers and software you use to access Online Banking.
  • Never leave your computer unattended while using Online Banking.
  • Always exit Online Banking using the logout button, and close your browser if you step away from your computer. Your browser may retain information you entered in the login screen and elsewhere until you exit the browser.
  • Avoid using public computers, such as in an airport or library, for your online banking. Although using a supported browser will help with security, public computers accessed by hackers can be made to store keystrokes and record personal information without your knowledge.
While using the Internet
  • Install and use a quality anti-virus program. As new viruses are created constantly, be sure to update your anti-virus program often.
  • Install and use a personal firewall on your computer to ensure others cannot access your computer through the Internet.
  • Install new security patches as soon as your operating system and Internet browser manufacturers make them available.
While using email
  • We never send sensitive information by email and request that you do the same. If you need to contact us with a personal inquiry, please do not send your details through email. Give our Member Communication Centre a call. Our representatives will be happy to assist you.
  • Do not follow links to our website or to online banking from within an email. We will never send these links in an email. Fake emails can look very authentic, and when you follow the link, you may be directed to a site that looks real but is actually set up to steal your personal information. Always type the website address into your browser or use your bookmarked web addresses.
  • Do not reply or respond to emails asking you to verify or otherwise supply personal information by email or by a link supplied by that email. We will never ask you to send private information through email. Nor will we ever ask for your Personal Access Code (PAC) or Personal Identification Number (PIN). We will ask for your answer to the security question when on the telephone or through secure forms. This allows us to identify you without us knowing your PIN or PAC, and prevents attempts by others to impersonate you.
