Interac e-Transfers

What is Interac® e-Transfer?

With Interac e-Transfers, you can send or receive money from your mobile phone or computer, just by using a mobile phone number or email address.

It's a convenient, fast and secure way to send funds.

Interac e-Transfers are easier than using cheques, more secure than cash and cost less than sending a wire.

How does it work?

Money is sent and received directly from and to your existing accounts, and the funds are available as soon as the transfer is complete. There's no need to set up a new account or user ID and password, and your personal information is never shared.

The funds are transferred using email addresses or mobile phone numbers, and a security question that only you and the recipient should know.

Recepients do not have to be members of Outlook Financial. Many financial institutions use Interac e-Transfers. For more information, please see the FAQ.

What does it cost?

There is a $1.50 fee for sending an Interac e-Transfer. Receiving Interac e-Transfers is free for Outlook Financial members.

Standard text messaging and data rates may apply, depending on your provider and plan.

Security

Your personal information is always secure because you don't share any of it with the recipient of the funds. You don't need to know the recipient's bank account number, and they never see yours. The only information exchanged is an email address, mobile phone number, or both, and a security question that you create and share with the recipient.

The funds are deposited directly into the recipient's account after the recipient has authenticated the email or text message by answering the security question.

With Interac e-Transfers you can:

  • send a new Interac e-Transfer via mobile phone, email or both.
  • add a personal message to each transfer.
  • view or cancel pending transfers and remind recipients of current transfers.
  • set up new transfer recipients and manage existing contacts.
  • view a history of your Interac e-Transfers.

Ready to get started?

Getting started with Interac e-Transfers is easy. All you need is an email address and/or a mobile phone number, and access to online banking through Online Banking. If you aren't already set up, check the Getting Started page.

To send an Interac e-Transfer:

  1. Have your mobile phone number or email address handy, and log in to Online Banking.
  2. Click Transfers and choose Send Interac e-Transfer from the left-hand menu.
  3. Once complete, click Edit Recipients and then Add Recipient to add a new transfer recipient.
    1. This is where you'll create a security question.
  4. Select Edit Sender Profile and enter your own information.
  5. Now that you're set up, click on Send Interac e-Transfer and enter the amount and recipient. Don't forget to let the recipient know the answer to the security question (but don't send it with the transfer).
  6. When the funds are accepted, you will be notified through email, text message or both, whichever you chose in step 4.


 To receive an Interac e-Transfer:

  1. You'll receive a notification via text message or email. The notification will include:
    1. Sender's name
    2. Transfer amount
    3. Expiry date
    4. Message from sender (optional)
    5. Links and directions to assist in the deposit of the Interac e-Transfer
  2. Click the link in the notification. You will be taken to the Interac website and asked to select your financial institution.
  3. Login to Online Banking via Internet or Mobile Banking.
  4. Answer the security question.
  5. Accept or decline the transfer.
  6. Deposit the funds into the account of your choice.
  7. Add an optional message to the sender and confirm the Interac e-Transfer.
  8. An Interac e-Transfer receipt will display.

More information

It may take 15 minutes or more for the notification to be sent and the funds received. When sending Interac e-Transfers the funds will be withdrawn from your account as soon as you click Confirm.
